CHM® Biofun M100 microbiological monitors: filtration, incubation and counting in a single device

CHM® Biofun M100 is a sterile, disposable, ready-to-use microbiological monitor that combines membrane filtration, incubation and the enumeration of microorganisms in aqueous samples in a single device. By converting into a Petri dish, the CHM® Biofun M100 monitor reduces sample handling and the risk of cross-contamination.

1. What is CHM® Biofun M100 and what is it used for?

CHM® Biofun M100 is a sterile, disposable, single-use, ready-to-use microbiological monitor designed for membrane filtration and the recovery and enumeration of microorganisms in aqueous samples. It combines the funnel, base, membrane and absorbent pad in a single unit and can be converted into a Petri dish for incubation.
It concentrates the microorganisms present in a sample on the surface of a membrane, where they can then be cultured and incubated to observe and count the colonies. It is intended for the microbiological monitoring of water, beverages, food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other aqueous samples.

2. Benefits of an all-in-one microbiological monitor

  • Time saved: the integrated design provides a high flow rate and reduces preparation time by up to 70% compared with the traditional method.
  • All-in-one: the membrane, absorbent pad, funnel and base are integrated into a single, ready-to-use device.
  • Sterile and ready to use: each CHM® Biofun M100 microbiological monitor is individually packaged and sterilised by gamma irradiation, eliminating the need to prepare the assembly beforehand.
  • Lower risk of contamination compared with reusable systems: after filtration, there is no need to transfer the membrane to a separate Petri dish, as the monitor itself becomes a culture plate.
  • Single-use device: the disposable system eliminates the need to sterilise reusable funnels and supports between samples, simplifying the procedure.

3. CHM® Biofun M100 versus traditional filtration systems

Traditional reusable system

Ready to use. Only the M100-ADAP adaptor is required on the CHM® filtration manifold.

Assembly required. The setup requires a funnel, porous support, vacuum, forceps and sterile Petri dishes.

Lower risk of contamination. There is no need to transfer the membrane to another Petri dish.

Higher risk of contamination. The membrane must be transferred using forceps; each additional handling step may increase the risk of contamination and affect the reliability of the results.

No prior sterilisation required. The unit is sterilised by gamma irradiation and individually packaged.

Sterilisation is mandatory. The funnel and support must be autoclaved, and the forceps sterilised using alcohol and a flame, before each use.

Direct progression to incubation. The CHM® monitor itself becomes a Petri dish.

Additional step. Prepare the plate with medium, transfer the membrane and then incubate.

Single-use system. No reusable parts are used between samples.

Reusable parts. These are cleaned and sterilised between samples, with a risk of carry-over if the process fails.

Reduces analysis preparation time by up to 70%.

More time and work required. Assembly, sterilisation, transfer and cleaning for every sample.
